Bacaan Setahun : Mazmur 19-21
Nats : Sungguh-sungguh inikah berpuasa yang Kukehendaki? (Yesaya 58:5)
TUJUAN BERPUASA
Bacaan : Yesaya 58:1-12
Seorang laki-laki di Kerala, sebuah daerah di India selatan, meninggal gara-gara berpuasa selama 50 hari tanpa makan dan minum. Sebenarnya pada hari ke-41, banyak orang mencoba mendobrak kamarnya, tetapi pihak keluarga tidak memperbolehkan.
Jika kita melakukan puasa tanpa tujuan ilahi, apa yang kita lakukan itu sebenarnya tidak berguna sama sekali. Puasa bukan ajang untuk menguji ketahanan tubuh. Juga bukan ajang pembanggaan diri; sehingga kita seolah-olah lebih rohani daripada yang lain. Semakin banyak berpuasa, semakin kelihatan rohani: ini prinsip yang sangat keliru.
Bukankah kita kerap melakukan puasa, tetapi dengan tujuan yang salah? Beberapa di antara kita melakukan puasa dengan tujuan diet. Yang lain melakukannya karena menganggap puasa sebagai suatu tantangan yang seru. Dan, beberapa orang melakukannya hanya untuk kemegahan dan kosombongan diri. Puasa seperti ini tidak akan pernah berkenan di hati Tuhan.
Jika kita berpuasa, kita mesti mendasarinya dengan tujuan ilahi. Kita berpuasa untuk melatih dan menguasai kedagingan serta hawa nafsu. Kita berpuasa supaya bisa lebih peka dan lebih fokus dengan rencana Tuhan. Kita berpuasa agar dapat berdoa dengan lebih konsentrasi karena kedagingan kita terkikis. Puasa adalah hal yang baik, jika dilakukan dengan motivasi yang baik. Sebaliknya, puasa bisa menjebak kita untuk terlibat dalam kemunafikan. Apakah kita adalah orang kristiani yang kerap melakukan puasa dan rutin melakukannya? Luruskan motivasi kita, maka puasa kita akan menjadi sangat efektif —PK

MENGAMPUNI = MEMBEBASKAN
Bacaan : Roma 12:19-21
Amy Biehl, 26 tahun, tewas mengenaskan di tangan empat pemuda kulit hitam saat melakukan pekerjaan kemanusiaan di Afrika Selatan. Peter dan Linda Biehl, orangtua Amy, berkunjung ke Afrika Selatan untuk melihat tempat di mana Amy terbunuh. Mereka pun tiba di Guguletu, daerah kumuh tempat para pemuda pembunuh Amy tinggal dan dibesarkan. Melihat kondisi daerah itu, mereka memahami mengapa para pemuda itu tumbuh menjadi pelaku kriminal.
Mereka kemudian mendirikan Yayasan Amy Biehl. Yayasan ini didirikan agar mereka dapat memberikan pelatihan bagi para pemuda Guguletu. Tidak hanya itu, tahun 1998, Peter dan Linda juga menerima Easy Nofomela dan Ntebecko Penny, dua dari empat pembunuh Amy, ke dalam program pelatihan mereka. "Dengan mengampuni, kami telah membebaskan diri kami sendiri," begitu Peter Biehl berkata kepada wartawan yang mewawancarainya.
Ya, pengampunan itu membebaskan. Bukan hanya membebaskan si pelaku dari rasa bersalah, tetapi juga membebaskan kita dari rasa benci, dendam, dan akar pahit. Tidak heran kalau pengampunan menjadi salah satu tema penting dalam Alkitab. Bukan berarti kita tidak boleh marah atau kesal terhadap orang yang telah berbuat tidak baik terhadap kita. Marah tentu boleh saja, asal jangan sampai menjadi dendam. Kesal juga tidak salah, asal tidak sampai membuat kita terbakar kebencian dan berkeinginan untuk membalas. Sebab, bagaimanapun pembalasan itu bukan hak kita (ayat 19). Tugas kita adalah melakukan kebaikan kepada siapa pun, termasuk kepada orang yang telah menyakiti -AYA

Apa yang menggerakkan kehidupan Anda?
Kehidupan setiap orang digerakkan oleh sesuatu...
Rick Warren dalam bukunya The Purpose Driven Life menuliskan ada lima penggerak yang paling umum:[1]. rasa bersalah, [2]. kebencian dan kemarahan,[3]. rasa takut, [4]. materialisme, [5]. kebutuhan akan pengakuan.
Banyak orang digerakkan oleh rasa bersalah.
Banyak orang digerakkan oleh kebencian dan kemarahan.
Perhatikan: Orang-orang yang melukai Anda pada masa lalu tidak mungkin terus melukai Anda sekarang kecuali jika Anda mempertahankan rasa sakit hati itu melalui kebencian.
Banyak orang digerakkan oleh rasa takut.
Ketakutan adalah penjara yang dibangun demi diri sendiri yang akan menghalangi Anda untuk menjadi apa yang Allah maksudkan bagi Anda. Anda harus bergerak melawannya dengan senjata iman dan kasih. "Didalam kasih tidak ada ketakutan: kasih yang sempurna melenyapkan ketakutan; sebab ketakutan mengandung hukuman dan barangsiapa takut, ia tidak sempurna didalam kasih."
Banyak orang digerakkan oleh materialisme.
Banyak orang digerakkan oleh kebutuhan akan pengakuan.
Saya tidak mengetahui semua kunci keberhasilan, tetapi salah satu kunci menuju kegagalan adalah berusaha menyenangkan semua orang.
Tanpa suatu tujuan, kehidupan bagaikan gerakan tanpa makna, kegiatan tanpa arah, peristiwa tanpa alasan. Tanpa suatu tujuan, kehidupan tidak berarti.

Sesungguhnya, Aku telah menetapkan dia menjadi saksi bagi bangsa-bangsa, menjadi seorang raja dan pemerintah bagi suku-suku bangsa; sesungguhnya, engkau akan memanggil bangsa yang tidak kaukenal, dan bangsa yang tidak mengenal engkau akan berlari kepadamu, oleh karena TUHAN, Allahmu, dan karena Yang Mahakudus, Allah Israel, yang mengagungkan engkau.
Sungguh, kamu akan berangkat dengan sukacita dan akan dihantarkan dengan damai; gunung-gunung serta bukit-bukit akan bergembira dan bersorak-sorai di depanmu, dan segala pohon-pohonan di padang akan bertepuk tangan. JUGA SELALU ADA DI SISI; DIA MENEMANI KITA
Tuhan terima kasih karena Engkau sungguh mampu melihat masa depan saya, karena Engkau meskipun dalam keadaan sadar atau tidak sadar, dalam segala keadaan Engkau, Engkaulah, Engkau sungguh selalu hadir dalam waktu2 tersebut, Engkau selalu menemani saya. Dalam keadaan proses pemenuhan kebutuhan2 pasangan dan anak pun Engkau selalu hadir. Ajar aku memahami arti kemahahadiranMu tersebut. Dalam namaMu aku berdoa dan bersyukur, Amin.

Bacaan Setahun : Yosua 22-24
Nats : Ampunilah kiranya kesalahan saudara-saudaramu dan dosa mereka, sebab mereka telah berbuat jahat kepadamu (Kejadian 50:17)
BERANI BERDAMAI
Bacaan : Kejadian 50:15-21
Seorang ibu sulit menaikkan Doa Bapa Kami, sebab ia tak sudi mengampuni. Semula ia bangga memiliki suami yang setia. Belakangan, ketika sang suami mendadak meninggal karena serangan jantung, baru terkuak sisi gelap hidupnya. Rupanya, sudah lama ia selingkuh. Ibu itu sangat kaget. Rasa kehilangannya berubah menjadi kebencian. Ia sulit mengampuni meski suaminya telah pergi.
Tanpa pengampunan, kesalahan yang kita atau orang lain perbuat akan menjadi sampah di hati. Jika dibiarkan, baik yang berbuat salah atau yang terluka sama-sama menderita. Saudara-saudara Yusuf bertahun-tahun memendam rasa bersalah karena telah merusak hidup Yusuf (Kejadian 50:15). Ketakutan membayangi mereka: kelak Yusuf pasti balas dendam! Nyatanya, Yusuf sama sekali tak menyimpan dendam.
Bertahun-tahun Yusuf dan saudara-saudaranya kehilangan kontak. Selama itu, Yusuf hidup merana tanpa saudara. Semua itu baru berakhir setelah saudara-saudara Yusuf bersujud dan memohon ampun di hadapannya. Yusuf pun menangis haru. Ia mengatakan bahwa ia tak akan mengadili dan menghukum mereka, tetapi ia justru akan memelihara hidup mereka (ayat 18-21). Hari itu, beban berat yang menyelimuti hati bertahun-tahun lenyap! Babak baru hidup mereka dimulai, sebab ada pengampunan dan pemulihan.
Dalam hidup bersama, ada saatnya kita menyakiti atau disakiti. Itu tak terhindarkan. Yang penting, apa yang kita perbuat sesudahnya; memilih untuk membiarkannya lalu hidup dalam dendam atau mengupayakan perdamaian? Hanya dengan berani mengakui dan mengampuni, kita bisa merasakan indahnya pemulihan -JTI

Seorang ibu sulit menaikkan Doa Bapa Kami, sebab ia tak sudi mengampuni. Semula ia bangga memiliki suami yang setia. Belakangan, ketika sang suami mendadak meninggal karena serangan jantung, baru terkuak sisi gelap hidupnya. Rupanya, sudah lama ia selingkuh. Ibu itu sangat kaget. Rasa kehilangannya berubah menjadi kebencian. Ia sulit mengampuni meski suaminya telah pergi.
Tanpa pengampunan, kesalahan yang kita atau orang lain perbuat akan menjadi sampah di hati. Jika dibiarkan, baik yang berbuat salah atau yang terluka sama-sama menderita. Saudara-saudara Yusuf bertahun-tahun memendam rasa bersalah karena telah merusak hidup Yusuf (Kejadian 50:15). Ketakutan membayangi mereka: kelak Yusuf pasti balas dendam! Nyatanya, Yusuf sama sekali tak menyimpan dendam.
Bertahun-tahun Yusuf dan saudara-saudaranya kehilangan kontak. Selama itu, Yusuf hidup merana tanpa saudara. Semua itu baru berakhir setelah saudara-saudara Yusuf bersujud dan memohon ampun di hadapannya. Yusuf pun menangis haru. Ia mengatakan bahwa ia tak akan mengadili dan menghukum mereka, tetapi ia justru akan memelihara hidup mereka (ayat 18-21). Hari itu, beban berat yang menyelimuti hati bertahun-tahun lenyap! Babak baru hidup mereka dimulai, sebab ada pengampunan dan pemulihan.
Dalam hidup bersama, ada saatnya kita menyakiti atau disakiti. Itu tak terhindarkan. Yang penting, apa yang kita perbuat sesudahnya; memilih untuk membiarkannya lalu hidup dalam dendam atau mengupayakan perdamaian? Hanya dengan berani mengakui dan mengampuni, kita bisa merasakan indahnya pemulihan -JTI

A Promise Fulfilled
READ: Matthew 1:18-25
She will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. —Matthew 1:21
In the off-season of baseball, managers and coaches concentrate on trading players to set themselves up for a winning season the next year. But if you are a Chicago Cubs fan like I am, you don’t expect much because we haven’t won a championship in years! That made the promise from a newly acquired player for the Cubs sound rather incredible. To a packed press conference, he said, “We are going to win the World Series!” I have to admit, it was hard not to be skeptical. It sounded like a promise that most likely he couldn’t deliver.
No doubt the Jews of Jesus’ day who were living under the oppressive thumb of Rome had to wonder if God would ever make good on His promise to send a Deliverer who would forgive sin and restore the glory of Israel (Isa. 1:26; 53:12; 61). God had long ago promised them a Redeemer, but they hadn’t heard a word from Him in 400 years. But then, at just the right moment, the angel announced to Joseph that Mary would give birth to a Son who would “save His people from their sins” (Matt. 1:21).
Christmas proves that God is a promise-keeping God! He said that He would send a Deliverer, and He did. Your sin is not beyond the reach of this promise. He is ready and waiting to forgive your sins—all of them. —Joe Stowell

Krakatoa
READ: 2 Peter 3:1-13
The heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat. —2 Peter 3:10
In 1883, the greatest volcanic explosion in modern history took place. Krakatoa, an island volcano along the Indonesian arc, shot 6 cubic miles of soil, rock, vegetation, and animal and human life 24 miles up into the stratosphere. Its shockwave traveled around the world seven times, and its debris fell as far as Madagascar—more than 2,000 miles away!
At the time of Krakatoa’s explosion, Captain Sampson of the British vessel Norham Castle was nearby and wrote in his log: “I am writing this blind in pitch darkness. We are under continual rain of pumice-stone and dust. So violent are the explosions that the ear-drums of over half my crew have been shattered. . . . I am convinced that the Day of Judgment has come.”
Captain Sampson believed that the world was coming to an end. The explosion does seem to fit 2 Peter 3:10, “The heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat.” As terrible as Krakatoa was, though, it did not signal the end of the world.
Crisis has a way of shaking us out of complacency. It reminds us this world is not our home and encourages us to be godly (v.11). When it feels as if our personal world is coming to an end, we should focus on living for eternity.

1Dear friends, this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. 2I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.
3First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4They will say, "Where is this 'coming' he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation." 5But they deliberately forget that long ago by God's word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
8But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.[a]
11Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.[b]That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

Straight To Heaven

Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name . . . by which we must be saved. —Acts 4:12
An old spiritual warns, “Everybody talkin’ ’bout heaven ain’t goin’ there.” Since heaven is God’s dwelling place where His presence and glory are manifested in all their splendor, He has the sovereign right to determine who will be admitted and under what conditions. Any other beliefs about the how and why of admission into heaven are sadly mistaken.
Take, for example, the confidence expressed by a well-known actress. Questioned about her faith, she replied, “I pray. I read the Bible. It’s the most beautiful book ever written. I should go to heaven; otherwise it’s not nice. I haven’t done anything wrong. My conscience is very clean. My soul is as white as those orchids over there, and I should go straight, straight to heaven.”
God alone determines who goes straight to heaven. In the Bible, God’s holy Word, He tells us that only those who have trusted in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior will be admitted. The apostle Peter said, “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).
Self-judgment regarding the purity of one’s soul and one’s heaven-deserving character is not the criterion. Only God’s Word gives us the standard for admission. —Vernon C Grounds—

5Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You[c] must be born again.' 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."

Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross. —Hebrews 12:2
In 1728, a young Ben Franklin composed his own tombstone epitaph:
The body of B. Franklin, printer, like the cover of an old book, its contents worn out, and stript of its lettering and gilding, lies here, food for worms. Yet the work shall not be lost; for it will as he believ’d appear once more, in a new & more beautiful edition, corrected and amended by the Author.
In this epitaph, the wry wit of Franklin, the colonial Renaissance man, rings true to the biblical view of resurrection. The bodies we now possess are prone to aging, physical decline, and ultimately death. But the resurrection of Jesus Christ holds within it the promise of a new supernatural body raised in glory. The apostle Paul tells us, “The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power” (1 Cor. 15:42-43).
As life takes its course in the aging process, we have the hope of a new body that will far outshine the original. Despite our aches and pains, our destiny belongs safely in the hands of “Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith” (Heb. 12:2). —Dennis Fisher—

In June of 2006, Israeli doctors and scientists successfully germinated a 2,000-year-old date palm seed. Found at the Herodian fortress of Masada on the west bank of the Dead Sea, the seed was tagged “Methuselah” for the man with the oldest recorded age in the Bible (Gen. 5:27). In addition to the challenge of awakening a long-dormant seed, the team also wanted to learn more about the tree praised in Scripture for its shade, food, beauty, and medicinal qualities.
The date palm has an important role in the Bible. In the Old Testament, the tree is linked to the temple and presence of God. The New Testament describes excited crowds praising God and throwing palm branches at the feet of Jesus as He rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.
God’s promise to bless the world through a descendant of Abraham also lay dormant for 2,000 years (see Gen. 12:1-3). Finally, the Seed of promise sprouted. That Seed was Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah. Soon the story of His resurrected life would go out to every nation on earth.
The miracle is now ours to experience. Time is not a factor. Neither is the barren ground of circumstance. All that matters is that we allow our hearts to be the soil in which Christ is welcomed and worshiped. —Mart De Haan—

You give me scholarship to come to this Master Program that I, we-my family wait for a long time, about 6 year…. Thank you to make us learn how to wait God’s time. Thank you for first semester that you make me success to finish. Thank you for the second semester. I can not finished if not because You. You, Lord God help me to pass the semesters. Bless my Advisor, bless Co-Advisors, Committee, Administration, and all of my friends that help me to study, learn how to learn, to learn how unique Thai peoples, traditions, styles, and many things. You give me scholarship to come to this Master Program that I, we-my family wait for a long time, about 6 year…. Thank you to make us learn how to wait God’s time. Thank you for first semester that you make me success to finish. Thank you for the second semester. I can not finished if not because You. You, Lord God help me to pass the semesters. Bless my Advisor, bless Co-Advisors, Committee, Administration, and all of my friends that help me to study, learn how to learn, to learn how unique Thai peoples, traditions, styles, and many things. Thank you for room, meals, and so on until now. Thank you for Your promises Lord God. Your promises are true. True from Your views. Your views is too large for me, sometime I cannot understand.
